go yankees!

i promise..i'm not a fair-weather fan, but ever since i moved from new york nine years ago...my yankees fever has succumbed to the "tylenol" effect, disguised as laziness.  i mean, i'm not  a crazy sports fan...nor do i know which cable channels showcase these events...i am currently only in on the dexter/californication and BORED TO DEATH on HBO (my new favorite show!) showtimes.

reluctantly, i will give props to my ex-husband, heretofore known as the "bushman", for my yankees re-awakening.   he is a die-hard yankees fan and has always taken our daughter to see them when they are in town.  she always wears her yankees hat and jersey, whether they are playing in person or on tv!  cute, right?

the best part is that if it weren't for the fact that she was sooooo into the "series", i might have lost the opportunity to be ecstatic, dejected, nervous, smug, humiliated, and then ecstatic all over again.  The same effervescence that took her from crawling to running, (seriously!), brought me back from ambivalence...

and tonight, after following the series, i am so excited.  there, i said it.  I AM VERY EXCITED THAT THE NY YANKEES WON THE WORLD SERIES.  ...and i can't wait until next year...

finally...

...back in april, i was fed up with my bedroom...small space, weirdly high angled "barn" ceiling, no storage, etc...so, i finally decided to get it together.  now, i didn't exactly achieve nirvana in the storage department, but i DID create a space that is livable, cozy and, above all, makes me smile when i wake up the morning...after all, isn't that the point?

first, i painted 27" wide horizontal orange stripes on the already-yellow walls.  this trick brought the room down to "eye" level...which makes you follow the walls and corners around the room instead immediately drawing your eye to the ceiling.

second, i really needed a headboard, but i didn't want to give up any unnecessary space...so i decided to create the "illusion" of one.  I applied one of favorite wallcoverings, Chiang Mai Dragon from F. Schumacher & Co. (www.fschumacher.com), the width of the mattress and then framed it with moulding.  in two hours i had the greatest headboard that i could have imagined for this room!  then i broke up the orange and yellow with a wonderful green matelasse quilt and white shams from Sferra 1891 (www.1891bysferra.com)

next, i moved my dresser into the garage adjacent to my bedroom (i know, weird, but this house was built in the 40's...must have been a carport or something), which i am converting into my 'walk-in closet'...stay tuned for that one.  i replaced it with a charming asian-latticework hutch that i found in a vintage shop, where i store some of my favorite books on the top shelves and (some of) my shoes in the bottom cabinet.  i debated getting rid of the plasma tv in my room entirely...but my current obsession with late-night dexter and californication made it impractical, really...i was able to mount it on a side wall, thanks to the ultra-extending/swiveling tv arm that i found at Best Buy.  the extra space that i gained allowed me to add my great-grandmother's tufted french settee at the foot of my bed :-)

anyway, here it is!

and here is a close-up of the FAB-U-LOUS wallpaper i used for the headboard!

schaap studios

i have recently discovered the work of Breanne Schaap, an amazing lifestyle photograper. Ironically, she is the daughter of some of my favorite clients...through working with them to create the perfect family beach house, i found out about Breanne's work.  Aside from the way she captures the perfect moments and expressions, she is also uses light and color to truly create one-of-a-kind images.  For studio shots, she uses the most beautiful backdrops to photograph her subjects...and, lucky for us, these backdrops are all for sale, under the name "drop it Modern".  You MUST check out her website to truly appreciate the magic!

my awesome day with eric cohler!

so, as luck would have it, i also got to sit next to Eric Cohler at a lunch hosted, once again, by my friends at kravet/lee jofa.  from the moment we sat down at the table we started chatting like old friends and i suspected that we were somehow kindred spirits.  besides leading his team at eric cohler designs, his firm in new york, he has also designed a line of fantastic textiles, furniture, and rugs for kravet/lee jofa and, of course, his work has been published multiple times in all of the top design magazines.  best of all, he is one cool, stylish cat.

check out his unbelievable work at www.ericcohler.com and his eponymous line at www.kravet.com
